Managing Raynaud’s doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little know how and some preparation you will be well equipped to not only fend off a chill, but handle one quickly should you find yourself feely icy. Below you will find Simple Tips to Manage your Raynaud’s.
1. Keep Warm
- Control your body temperature whenever possible. Dress in layers so you can easily add or remove them to maintain optimal temperature and comfort. Keep a small space heater handy to quickly warm up a small area. And in the summer, turn air conditioning down, or at the least, turn off blowers so the air doesn’t blow directly on you. Keeping a lightweight jacket or thin throw blanket handy will prove useful as well.
- When outdoors, keep your body from getting too cold by wearing a coat, hat and warm clothing. Feathery down coats keep your core warm, won’t weigh you down and allow better movement for better circulation. Wear a scarf and warm socks (with warmers or battery-operated heaters if necessary)
2. Focus on your Hands and Feet
- For your hands, mittens are preferable to gloves as they allow more movement and your fingers help spread the warmth.
- Consider adding an additional layer of warmth with glove liners and sock liners. Consider silk due to its natural moisture wicking properties.
- Keep portable hand and feet warmers with you at all times, or consider keeping them in the car, office and purse. These will provide instant and long lasting heat when you need them most.
3. Use a hat
- It’s amazing just how much heat escapes from your head. Always carry a hat – a light baseball hat for the chilly summer nights and a knit hat in winter.
4. Stay Dry
- Damp conditions are ripe for triggering a Raynauds attack – even when the temperature isn’t that low. It is even more difficult to warm up in damper conditions. Carry an umbrella, invest in a durable rain coat and wear rubber boots when rain is in the forecast.
5. Use Rewarming Techniques
- Get up and move your body around. Light, active movement is best to generate body heat. Simple movements like a brisk walk, arm circles and even light jumping is a perfect way to gently rewarm your body.
